Building begins

The first signs of serious modelling on the layout are the first buildings.

All these are scrach-built, mostly using plasticard over a card inner structure. All are closely based on actual buildings,

This is the Railway Goods Offices. The most substantial of the railway buildings. The wall to the right is now the only remaining trace of the station still standing.

On Show: Lockwood St at Hull Model Railway Show 2015

Lockwood Street was introduced to the unsuspecting pubic at the Hull Model Railway Show last weekend.

As well as the baseboards we displayed the first few buildings to be completed by Ray, samples of the Finetrax track we are using alongside pieces of Peco code 55 and code 80 to demonstrate the difference in appearance, and a slideshow of some of the prototype photos we are using for reference.

While very much early days, as a local subject the layout attracted a lot of interest and importantly several people offered information about the original Cannon Street and the environs which is much appreciated.

If you visited the show then thank you!

Hopefully the Completed Layout will debut at Hull Model Railway show  in either 2017 or 2018.

Hull Model Railway Show 7th & 8th November 2015

We are please to announce that we have been asked to put on a display of our plans for Lockwood Street at the forthcoming Hull Model Railway Show on 7th & 8th November 2015.

We hope to have the more or less complete baseboards, and maybe the first few buildings and trackwork components.

If you want to see how we are progressing or if you have any memories of the railways of Hull, please come along and see us, we will be pleased to talk to you!

Highlights among the other 16 layouts on show will be 'The World End' - Peter Goss's new layout, 'Boot' from Peter Kaser showing the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway in original 3ft gauge form, 'Eaton Gommery' - Pre Grouping railways from Wigan Railway Modellers and Lego Trains for the younger visitors!

Timber...

Having worked out what we want to include on the layout and how it could be arranged, we have settled on three scenic boards of 4ft x 2ft 6in; the end two being rectangular, the middle angled at one end.

Thanks, particularly to the enthusiasm of one recent recruit to the team, the basic boards have been completed in under a month.

The boards are a plywood box structure (6mm thick for the sides and top, 12mm for the ends) with 1x1 softwood battens along the joins.

The odd shaped centre board. - The 'easy' square ones are complete and standing in the corner.

Plans...

The first step is to plan ahead...

We start out with a map of the area around Cannon Street c1928...
clearly there is too much here to fit on a manageable baseboard width so some rationalisation will be necessary but we could still include enough to create a layout that will hopefully be interesting to operate and watch...
